The brake caliper bolt is one of the smallest fasteners on your road bike, yet it holds the component responsible for your safety at speed. Whether you are re-installing a caliper after travel or upgrading to titanium, understanding this bolt matters.
Most road bikes ship with steel caliper mounting bolts — strong but heavy. Swapping to Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V titanium retains the strength while cutting grams across the full brake hardware.

The SL8/S5 front disc mount alone drops 8.3 g per side. Add titanium center lock caps and the savings compound quickly.
1. Remove the Old Bolt
Hold the caliper steady. Back the bolt out with a hex key — do not let the caliper hang by the hose.
2. Inspect and Clean
Check the frame insert for debris or cross-thread damage. Wipe both bolt and mount clean before re-installing.
3. Install and Align
Thread by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench to the manufacturer's spec. Spin the wheel to confirm the rotor runs clean through the pads.
