Jake took a sip at 60 km, cadence steady. Then his right hand jerked — cage loose, one bolt gone. Hardware he never thought about had just ended his rhythm.
Carbon frame bosses trap moisture. Steel bolts seize — you drill or break the boss. Aluminum snaps if overtightened. Your cage wobbles or your bottle launches mid-ride.
Cage bolts handle vibration and lateral pull. Steel corrodes and galls. Titanium doesn't. Ti-6Al-4V ≈ 950 MPa tensile, elastic modulus half of steel — the bolt micro-flexes back instead of shearing loose.
