If you've browsed new road bikes recently, you've probably seen "UDH" appear in the spec sheet. Here's what it actually means — and why it matters for your next upgrade.
A derailleur hanger is the small, replaceable component bolted to the frame's dropout that holds the rear derailleur in position. It is a sacrificial part — designed to bend or break on impact to protect the frame.
Every road bike has one. It's the most commonly replaced mechanical component on a bike.
UDH stands for Universal Derailleur Hanger, a standard introduced by SRAM in 2019.

After UDH:
Most new road bikes from major manufacturers now ship with UDH as standard:
| Brand | Compatible Models |
|---|---|
| Specialized | Tarmac SL8, Venge, Aethos, Roubaix |
| Cervelo | S5, R5, Caledonia |
| Colnago | Y1RS, V4RS |
| Canyon | Aeroad, Ultimate |
| Trek | Madone, Emonda |
| Giant | TCR, Propel |
| Scott | Addict, Foil |
SRAM's official UDH compatibility list covers hundreds of frames. If you're buying a new high-end road bike in 2024 or later, it almost supports UDH.
|
Easier Replacement A damaged hanger is no longer a frame-specific nightmare. Any bike shop can source a UDH hanger off the shelf — especially valuable when traveling or riding in remote areas.
|
Simpler Sourcing Frame manufacturers no longer need to produce dozens of proprietary hanger shapes. UDH reduces the supply chain to one design.
|
|
Broader Compatibility A UDH hanger from one brand works with derailleurs from any other — Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo — as long as both are UDH-compatible.
|
Future-Proofing UDH is now the de facto standard on new road and mountain bikes. UDH frames are less likely to face parts obsolescence.

One detail often overlooked: the rear derailleur is held to the hanger by a pivot bolt. This bolt matters more than you'd think.

The R7170's stock pivot bolt is the heaviest among Shimano 12-speed groupsets:
| Groupset | Stock Pivot Bolt | TiNE Replacement | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shimano 105 (R7170) | 8.4g | 2.0g | 6.4g |
| Ultegra (R8170) | ~3g | 2.0g | ~1g |
| Dura-Ace (R9270) | ~3g | 2.0g | ~1g |
TiNE also offers titanium rear derailleur limit and tension screws — a set of 2 screws at 1.0g vs stock up to 3.0g, saving up to 2.0g.
Some frames use direct-mount derailleur hangers without the full UDH standard — often on older or mid-range models. These are not cross-compatible with UDH hangers. Always check your frame's specification before ordering.
For Specialized SL8 owners: the frame uses a UDH-compatible direct-mount hanger. The rear derailleur pivot bolt is an M6 thread — the same thread used across all Shimano 12-speed groupsets.
Only if the frame has a UDH interface. Most new high-end road bikes from 2019 onwards do. Check your frame manufacturer's specification.
No. UDH is a frame hanger standard, not a drivetrain standard. UDH-compatible frames work with Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo derailleurs that also support UDH.
No. The hanger is a mechanical interface. Shifting quality is determined by the derailleur, cable tension, and limit settings — not the hanger standard itself.
Inspect it whenever you clean your bike. Replace at any sign of bending or cracking — a damaged hanger will cause poor shifting and can damage the derailleur.
