Shimano 105 R7170 Titanium Bolt Kit 109g Weight Distribution Breakdown

The TiNE titanium bolt kit drops 109.4g from a Shimano 105 R7170 groupset — the single largest weight reduction of any product in the TiNE catalog. But 109g is an aggregate number. Where does it actually come from? The answer is not evenly distributed: two component areas account for roughly two-thirds of the total savings, and understanding that split changes how you think about the upgrade.

The Two Heavy Contributors

Shimano 105 uses heavier steel fasteners across every bolt position compared to Ultegra and Dura-Ace. That is where the 109g advantage originates — the baseline is simply heavier. Two subsystems dominate the savings:

The hydraulic bolt set (shifter hose bolts + caliper hose bolts + caliper bleed port) and the derailleur bolt set together save roughly 24g — around 22% of the total 109.4g from just a handful of fasteners. The remaining 85g comes from the crank, brake caliper body bolts, and other positions where 105 steel parts are heavier than their Ultegra/Dura-Ace counterparts.

Why 105 Owners Benefit Most

The same TiNE kit weighs 69.9g across all three groupsets. The difference is the starting point: 105 R7170 stock bolts total 179.3g, Ultegra R8170 total 145.3g, and Dura-Ace R9270 total 117.7g. Shimano already reduces fastener weight as you move up the hierarchy — Dura-Ace uses lighter alloys and fewer steel bolts. So the TiNE kit saves less from a Dura-Ace bike (47.8g) because there is less excess material to replace.

For a 105 rider, the 109.4g reduction is comparable to swapping an aluminum seatpost collar for a titanium one and replacing the derailleur pivot bolt and changing four water bottle cage screws — except it happens in a single bolt kit that covers every fastener on the groupset. The weight saving per dollar is significantly higher for 105 owners than for Dura-Ace owners running the same TiNE kit.

All three versions of the TiNE Shimano bolt kit use the same 69.9g titanium fastener set. The 105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace distinction is only in which stock bolts they replace — the titanium parts are identical.
