But these two fasteners control the exact boundaries of your shifting: the high-limit screw prevents the chain from dropping off the small cog, the low-limit screw prevents overshifting into the spokes, and the tension screw sets the cage gap that determines chain wrap. On the 105 R7170, the stock pair weighs 3.0 g. Why These Two Screws Matter More Than Their Weight Suggests

Limit and tension screws are adjustment points — they sit at the back of the derailleur body and are turned with a small hex key to fine-tune shifting precision. On Shimano's 12-speed groups, the R7170 uses a separate steel screw for each function, while the R9270 Dura-Ace uses a lighter integrated design. The R8170 Ultegra sits between them.

The weight difference is most pronounced on the 105 R7170, where the stock steel pair is 3.0 g.
