Are Titanium Bolts Safe for Your Darimo Nexum Stem Clamp?

The Darimo Nexum one-piece handlebar is held together at the stem clamp by exactly two M4×16 bolts — and those two bolts are the only thing keeping your bar attached to the steerer. They're small, they're often overlooked, and the stock versions are steel. TiNE makes titanium replacements that save 2.2-3.2 g per pair, but the real question is whether they hold up under load.

Are Titanium Bolts Safe on a Carbon Cockpit?

This is the first question anyone asks, and it's a fair one. The Darimo Nexum is a carbon bar and stem assembly, so any metal part clamping onto it needs to be the right material in the right geometry. Two things make TiNE's bolts safe:

Geometry match. The TiNE M4×16 bolt has the same shoulder profile, head diameter, and countersink angle as the OEM steel version. The bolt seats into the carbon clamp exactly the same way — there's no stress concentration created by the material change, only by the material being lighter.

Material choice. Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V has a higher strength-to-weight ratio than the steel it replaces, and titanium's fatigue life under cyclic clamp load is well documented in aerospace and cycling applications. The bolt doesn't need to be stronger than steel — it needs to be the same strength with less mass, and Ti-6Al-4V does that.

The savings are small per bolt but consistent — and Darimo cockpits are the category of bike where every gram at the stem faceplate matters because that mass sits at the steering axis. Less rotational inertia at the front of the bike means quicker steering response on technical descents and accelerations out of the saddle.

What to Check Before Swapping

Confirm your Darimo is the Nexum model — TiNE's M4×16 spec is for the Nexum clamp interface only. Other Darimo models (the older T2, the Ellipse, etc.) use different bolt patterns and TiNE makes a different bolt for each. Verify by measuring the bolt head diameter on your current bolts: Nexum uses a 2.5 mm hex key, which is smaller than most stem bolts.

Torque to Darimo's spec — typically 2.5 Nm on the Nexum stem clamp. Don't exceed this. Titanium Ti-6Al-4V holds torque without thread stretch, but the carbon clamp around it has its own limit.

Color and Finish

The TiNE M4×16 bolts come in the standard 8 anodized colors: gold, blue, rainbow, silver, black, pink, green, and purple. The anodized layer is a surface oxide, not paint, so it won't chip under the 2.5 Nm torque spec or fade with sun exposure. On a one-piece cockpit where every visible fastener is otherwise black or silver, a small color accent at the stem clamp is one of the easiest visual upgrades available.
